Did you now that in Italy there’s another small state like the Vatican? This is the Repubblica of San Marino, a tiny ancient European State, whose earliest statutes date back to 1263, was recognized by Napoleon in 1797 and by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. San Marino maintains diplomatic and consular relations with a number of European and American countries, mints its own coins, issues its own postage stamps and grants honours of merit. With an area of less than 24 square miles, it is the smallest independent state in Europe after Vatican City and Monaco. In the mid afternoon, back to Florence.

After breakfast, depart for a full day excursion in the famous Cinque Terre by boat: discover 18 kilometres of sheer rocky coastline in northern Italy, terraced hills and vineyards sloping steeply down to the sea. Five little villages are built into the rocks between the beach and the hills: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monterosso. Evening arrival in your hotel in the charming resort town of Rapallo. Dinner at the hotel.

Today move to the Levante Riviera to visit Genova and Portofino. Originally a small fishing village shaded by eucalyptus and olive trees, Portofino has become a sunny and relaxing paradise on the Ligurian Riveria. From the summit of Monte Portofino, above the town, there are stunning panoramic views across the Mediterranean to the mountains of Corsica. Genova is an amazing city containing many beautiful wonders. Palaces and galleries, bursting with fine art, are set around one of the loveliest streets in Italy, Via Garibaldi. Return to Rapallo for overnight.

This morning the Italian landscape will change completely. Travel to Turin, once the main town of the Savoy state, later capital of Italy, a city proud of its historical tradition, which seems to be testified everywhere in its historical centre. Visit to the Royal Palace, a magnificent 17th century building, the French Gardens, the Teatro Regio, the Madama Palace and the Royal Armoury, with the splendid Beaumont Gallery. The tour ends in Piazza Castello, in one of its historical cafès, to sample some of Turin’s delicious specialities.
